Building Owner: Doris Antoniou

Design: ena-architecture

Location: Sapounakaiika Arcadia, Peloponnese, Greece

Services:

Design, planning, construction management in Greek language, construction realisation.

In brief:

Holiday complex with five apartments, each approximately 32m ², situated on the outskirts of Sapounakaiika. Materials: exposed concrete, stone masonry of granite, slate, wood, hand-forged steel.

Task:

Modern building nestled in the village structure and topography. The integration of an innovative, ecological construction with the technical skills and capabilities of local craftsmen.

Challenge:

Narrow village streets and steeply sloping terrain did not allow the use of larger machines. A total of 144m ³ were processed by hand in situ with cement mixers, edited 27m ³ of natural stone, 300m ² laid slate stone tiles. The logistics for transport in a confined space for temporary storage of building materials, turned out to be difficult.

Results:

With subtle and solid materials, a consistent, modern as well as warm, ambience is created. With the limited use of plastics and adhesives, and the architectural arrangement of the rooms and ceiling heights, it meets today's demands for innovative, ecological buildings. Even in high summer temperatures exceeding 40 ° C, the sufficient insulation and the thermal circulation through the different room heights combined with a fan, results to the indoor temperature not exceeding 25 ° C. This natural cooling aeration allowed the space free from an energy-consuming air-conditioning system.
